HOW VOTING WORKS
FIRST STEP ~ GET REGISTERED
If you are new to Canada you must be 18 years of age and meet the right criteria to legally vote. If you have never voted, or received a card before, you can register at Elections Canada
SECOND STEP ~ WHEN YOU CAN VOTE AND HOW
You can vote on election day, at an advanced poll (in case you are on vacation or out of the country), Vote by mail, or vote on the advertised Voting Date. On your card it will tell you where your voting station is.
I NEED TO MAKE CHANGES TO VOTE
Did you move? Have you changed your legal name? Elections Canada has all the answers.
POLLING STATION
Polling stations are normally held in the gyms of schools and colleges, nursing homes and some apartments. Bring photo identification with you. Look for the official Elections Canada sign. When you arrive at a polling station you will need to show your election card or your identification. If you do not have a card, they will ask you to go to a table where you will show your Identification and see if your name is on their printed list. Once they see that you are at the right polling station they will give you a slip of paper with all the candidates names on it. There will be a circle beside the name and you will be asked to mark an X inside the circle. Make sure you follow the rules or your vote will not be counted.
WHERE CAN YOU FIND ELECTION RESULTS

HOW THE NEW PRIME MINISTER IS ELECTED
FIRST PAST THE POST
What does first past the post mean? When the election results are posted, the party that won the most seats wins. That would mean the Leader of that Party becomes the new Prime Minister. To learn more about Minority and Majority governments this website explains it very well.
