Why do the NDP support the Liberals?

The two parties signed a deal in March 2022 in which the NDP agreed to support the minority Liberals on key votes in Parliament in exchange for action on NDP policy priorities.  Jagmeet Singh must also stay in power until 2025 in order to collect his full pension

HISTORY OF THE NDP

To understand the NDP you need to read their history.  They have NEVER won a minority or majority vote in Canada.

In the 2019 federal election, the NDP won only 24 seats in its worst result since 2004, shedding 15 seats.

In March 2022, the NDP agreed to a confidence and supply deal with the Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.  Public opinion is that Jagmeet Singh did this in order to push some of his own bills through the House of Commons but it also allows him to keep his seat until 2025 when he qualifies for a full pension

The NDP platform states that they are committed to public health care and fights for “a national, universal, public pharmacare program to make sure that all Canadians can access the prescription medicine they need” But every program that he recommends costs the tax payers millions of dollars, and he does not have an answer of where this money is coming from considering Canada’s debt.  He has also supported the increase in the Carbon Tax which makes life generally unaffordable for Canadians (March 2024)
